SPECIAL NEWS REPORT: If you listen to the media long enough, you will begin to allow the negativity to permeate your thought life. Indeed, your soul. And if the negativity doesn’t petition your mind, the fallout of fear will paralyze your heart. One sensational story after another until most retreat into their small corner of the world overwhelmed by the imagery; too angry and emotionally spent to do anything but lodge one complaint after another to anyone who will listen on social media. Yet no one hears anyone else because each voice finds itself lost in a cacophony of helplessness. So today, the Covid-19 virus (better known as the novel corona virus-19) dominates the news cycle. We are continuously being told that the Covid-19 virus is a worldwide pandemic. And most likely it is. But so too is heart disease, cancer, diabetes, homicide.

One of the most challenging aspects of being a trainer is listening to the horror stories people have gone through. What’s truly amazing is how resilient we human beings are. Yet, just because we have the capacity to get through anything doesn’t mean there isn’t a price to be paid. There is. Some of my clients found it much more difficult, if not impossible, to see any silver lining in their experiences or to imagine a day where they could come out on the other side of the proverbial mountain intact. The pain of what they went through was too great to bear. It consumed them until it became its own personality. Food became an emotional crutch. Gaining weight evoked feelings of self-loathing. Losing weight made them feel anxious because they might have to deal with unwanted solicitations from faceless men. The triggers were too numerous. What to do?

Your entire life people have doubted you. They have hated you. They have overlooked you. Promotions that you knew were yours have been withheld or given to someone else who was less qualified. Then there are those days when you don’t have the energy to face the enormity and unpredictability of the new day. Face it, there are days you want to wave the white flag and give up, but you don’t because you know that would only give fuel to your haters. These are the times when you need to hit the reset muscle.

Last week, I talked a bit about “the Decision Muscle’… That your potential to achieve anything in life is within you. That is, with one small caveat, you must believe you can. Yet, self-belief, though monumentally important, is not enough. Self-belief may get you to the door, but it won’t open it. Only a decision will do that. You may think you’re not talented enough or smart enough, but you’re wrong. Every human being partakes in the same genome pool. Indeed, the same DNA in Michael Jordan or Da Vinci or Gandhi is in you. Does that mean you’ll ‘Be Like Mike,’ paint the Mona Lisa or save the world? Probably not! But that doesn’t mean that within you isn’t the capacity to be a role model for a child, paint smiles on people’s faces, or spark change. You are stronger and more powerful than you think. But this too is a decision. This too requires the timing muscle.

If every human being possesses every human trait then why do some seem more gifted and talented than others? Is it the environment that determines our gifts and talents, or is it genes being switched off or on? And how much control, if any, do we have over which talents and gifts we can claim as ours. And can our gifts and talents be further developed into the area of greatness versus those that seem far beyond our reach? Like possessing a 45 inch vertical or writing a new computer language? No matter how hard you wish, meditate, or pray to be smarter, thinner, more talented, you will ultimately have to make a decision.

Contrary to popular belief, you are who you are because of the way you've interacted with your environment. In other words, you are a series of steps and choices you've made for your life. The new science tells us that this does not happen according to a fixed blueprint incised at conception into our genes. It happens because of the way our genotype interacts with our environment, stimulating responses in our core physiological processes throughout our lifetime.

The famous Persian Poet, Rumi once said: “Seek the wisdom that will untie the knot. Seek the path that demands your whole being.” I find it thought-provoking that in this culture we refer to the grand life-changing event of marriage as tying the knot. But here Rumi is offering a different idea altogether. He is talking about untying the knot of those things that bind us like baggage from our past.

By the age of fifty, or shortly thereafter, most so-called experts don't believe there's an upside to your health at all. In fact, most would argue that you're on the decline at that juncture— that it is nearly impossible to fortify your health and thus make any appreciable gains or progress. Particularly, if your goal is increased strength or muscle gain relative to muscle toning. So, say goodbye to that beach body unless you are willing to undergo cosmetic surgery, hormone replacement therapy, gastric bypass, or use steroids. That’s because, according to the so-called experts, your days for achieving muscular gains and decreasing body fat have long passed. But they're wrong. Very wrong.
