Every new year begins with the same old message. Do this…, and the results will magically follow. And what they offer are the most understated workouts one could imagine. I remember a few years ago the big craze was the five-minute workout. Five-minutes? Really? Look, the only way a five-minute workout can have any real impact on your health is if you’ve been bed-ridden for an extended period of time, you’re a complete couch potato or have essentially lost all motor functionality. It isn’t to say five minutes of movement means nothing to the body because that would be a misstatement of basic human physiology. But working out five minutes a day is not going to allow your star to align with all the other known stars in the workout universe. It just isn’t. And shame on you if you’d ever want such a shortcut.

It’s nearly impossible to keep track of all lies and misleading commercial ads we’ve been exposed to by the food industry. There are times where they have misinformed us taking advantage of our ignorance. And there are times when their willful negligence has been deliberate. What you may not know is that the food industry is controlled by only10 companies. Almost every large food and beverage brand is controlled by them. They are— Nestle, PepsiCo, Coca-Cola, Unilever, Danone, General Mills, Kellogg’s, Mars, Associated British Foods, and Mondelez. Each employs thousands, and each makes billions of dollars in revenue every year.

Today is Election Tuesday in America. And you would be hard-pressed to walk by any screen without seeing another political ad or to hear talking heads passionately debate the current political climate. The graffiti of the mid-term political season spills over into our lives, onto our lawns, and even shows up as unsolicited reminders in mailboxes all across America. We’re told amid all the finger-pointing, public shaming, and blaming, we’re also being told what the most important issues should be to us. We don’t get to vote on that. We’re simply handed a multiple-choice ballot and then and only then is our collective voice counted. All other days, months, weeks, years, we are to remain the silent majority— That is, until the forces of power grant us permission to speak out, or in the case of the current political climate, to act out. But this is done to our peril. At least, in my opinion, to the peril of our health.

Seek the path that demands your whole being.” I find it thought-provoking that in this culture we refer to the grand life-changing event of marriage as tying the knot. But here Rumi is offering a different idea altogether. He is talking about untying the knot of those things that bind us like baggage from our past.

Does your body know how old you are is an interesting question for sure, but can what you believe change the way your body thinks or performs? About a week ago, I was listening to a sports talk show called, “Undisputed.” “Undisputed,” is moderated by Jenny Taft and hosted by former NFL Hall-of-Famer, Shannon Sharpe along with renowned sports journalist, Skip Bayless. In this particular episode, they opened the show with a heated debate about Tom Brady, the future hall-of-fame quarterback from the New England Patriots. His trainer made some “outrageous statements” about Tom Brady’s ability to play until he’s 50-years of age because his brain believes he is much younger than his actual chronological age which is 41.

In this episode, we continue to seek answers to the question: Why do we age? Did you know that after just a few strength training sessions your brain learns to recruit more muscle fibers and make them contract all at once to produce a greater force? The process is called” neural activation” and it kicks in after only a few workouts, which allows for significant strength gains almost immediately. In short, muscles grow stronger before they become noticeably bigger. After just a few short workouts, you are recreating a better, younger, stronger, more functionally sound version of yourself. Further strength gains come as the individual muscle fibers within your muscles get bigger, which begins in as little as two weeks.

In this episode, we continue to seek answers to the question: Why do we age? Why do we age? If the answer is obvious to you, it’s only because you’ve been led to believe that aging is some linear process you have no control over, and all of the so-called age-related diseases are an inevitability. When you think of the baby boomer generation, you think of an aging population that is living longer relative to years, yet whose quality of life has not changed much more than their predecessors. Why is that? The sheer number of baby boomers living with prescription cocktails from statin drugs to beta-blockers, to lifelong intervention therapies, like dialysis, speaks volumes about their quality of life. Across America, 37 million people suffer from chronic kidney disease, and more than 726,000 have end-stage renal disease. According to a Center for Disease Control report released in 2017, more than 100 million U.S. adults are now living with diabetes or prediabetes. Which is more important to you? Longevity or the quality of life?

Last week, I talked a bit about “the Decision Muscle’… That your potential to achieve anything in life is within you. That is, with one small caveat, you must believe you can. Yet, self-belief, though monumentally important, is not enough. Self-belief may get you to the door, but it won’t open it. Only a decision will do that. You may think you’re not talented enough or smart enough, but you’re wrong. Every human being partakes in the same genome pool. Indeed, the same DNA in Michael Jordan or Da Vinci or Gandhi is in you. Does that mean you’ll ‘Be Like Mike,’ paint the Mona Lisa or save the world? Probably not! But that doesn’t mean that within you isn’t the capacity to be a role model for a child, paint smiles on people’s faces, or spark change. You are stronger and more powerful than you think. But this too is a decision. This too requires the timing muscle.

One of the most challenging aspects of being a trainer is listening to the horror stories people have gone through. What’s truly amazing is how resilient human beings are. Yet just because we have the capacity to get through anything doesn’t mean there isn’t a price to be paid. There is. Some of my clients found it much more difficult, if not impossible, to see any silver lining in their experiences or to imagine a day where they could come out on the other side of the proverbial mountain intact. The pain of what they went through was too great to bear. It consumed them until it became its own personality. Food became an emotional crutch. Gaining weight evoked feelings of self-loathing. Losing weight made them feel anxious because they might have to deal with unwanted solicitations from faceless men. The triggers were too numerous. What should you do?
