Life Lessons We Had Forgotten Before Covid Vol. 6 (rePLAY)

There are lessons we should have learned before COVID but didn’t. I do not say this in a political way. I have ZERO interest in the politics of this pandemic. My only interest is in the people, the populations the politics affect. Which is to say, my interest is in how people are reacting to the political narrative, and the subsequent choices they are forced to make as a consequence. Last week, I talked candidly about the power of choice we wield as human beings, and how that power distinguishes us from other animals. This is the forgotten miracle. That each of us has within our possession the power to choose our destiny; that we may not have the power to prevent the storms of life, but we do have the power to choose how we go through them. I want to prove to you that you are more important than you think.

Spring has always been my favorite time of year— the only season that even affectionately comes close is Fall. I suppose I am a change romantic at heart. That is someone who is captivated by the power and possibility of transformation. Change is inevitable. But transformation? Well, both Spring and Fall represent that to me. They symbolize the need for change— that for life to continue unabated change must occur. Think about that for a minute. Change is necessary. One of the life lessons we should have learned before COVID is that change is a requirement for the continuance of life. We human beings go through seasonal changes as well— That, too, is inevitable. However, we have within us the power to not only master the seasons of our lives but also to co-create a landscape for change.

Every day, we hear rumors and speculation relative to the reopening of American society. There is even a government task force that has laid out a detailed plan in phases. While still being ever mindful of social distancing and large group gathering. According to experts, the arc of the virus has indeed peaked and is now in its predictable trajectory of decline. Yet, many consider what life will be like after society reopens. One thing most haven’t given much thought to is what life was like before COVID.

There are life lessons we should have learned before COVID-19 but didn’t. Perhaps we didn’t want to learn them out of sheer ignorance or arrogance. Or maybe, we failed to learn these lessons because to do so meant we would have to change something about ourselves, in particular our beliefs. Undoubtedly, the most difficult mechanism to change is one’s belief system. Why? Because our beliefs shape our worldview and our worldview defines who we are— At least that’s what most seem to believe. However, if we allow ourselves to be solely defined by what we believe, then what happens when the world challenges those beliefs? Or, deeper still, when we confront or change them? What happens to our self-concept then? Indeed, what happens to our view of the world?

One of the often-overlooked facets of any crisis is what it reveals. What we are learning about the average American is that many more of our neighbors are living with preexisting conditions than what was previously thought— indeed, ignored by them as well as the medical establishment. For decades, we have winked at the rising incidence of pre-diabetes along with other immune compromising disorders because they were otherwise invisible silent killers, which receive little or no media attention, though they kill tens of thousands of our neighbors, co-workers, friends, and family members every year. We didn’t even seem to mind the increasingly ominous corporate footprint of yet another dialysis center springing up in our small towns, rural areas, and metropolitan cities. We took it all in stride until Covid-19 reminded us otherwise.

I’m one of those people who is wired, or blessed, if you will, to see a sliver of hope in the direst situations. And no, I’m not an eternal optimist. I’m a lot more pragmatic than that. I seldom look at the world through rose-colored glasses unless I can see, hear, taste, touch, and smell the roses for myself. So, when all the panic began regarding Covid-19, I took a measured step back and observed—not what the news media narrative was pronouncing— but how real people, everyday people, were reacting to the closures and eventual cancellations; indeed, the near shutdown of everything we considered normal. Was there a life lesson I needed to learn? Was there a life lesson I had discovered before Covid-19?

Ep. 93 - Why Cells Die pt. 4 (rePLAY)
Tuesday Mar 23, 2021
Tuesday Mar 23, 2021
Why do we age? Is it because our cells possess some internal clock. So, when the sand runs out of the hourglass, per se, we die? What does aging look like? Wrinkles in the face, brown spots on the hands? Does age appear with the greying of the hair or the dimming of one’s sight? Or is aging something more complicated and intricate altogether? Are the (so-called) signs of aging nothing more than symptoms of something else going on deep inside the cell? Still, why do cells die?

Why do we age? Is it because our cells possess some internal clock? So, when the sand runs out of the hourglass, per se, we die? Or is it as some theories suggest, our parts merely wear down and out by some of the same processes that cause the metal to rust on your car or an apple sitting on a countertop to rot? If you believe this (and millions do), then you subscribe to what is known as the free radical theory. So, is there such a thing as the wear and tear of aging?

Ep. 91 - Can You Stop Aging? pt. 2 (rePLAY)
Tuesday Mar 09, 2021
Tuesday Mar 09, 2021
The idea that our bodies wear out and succumb to the forces of entropy like everything else we see around us – our cars, our houses, our furniture, our clothes, and electrical devices, has dominated the narrative of human science for centuries. It has certainly dominated the field of gerontology and other biological sciences in one form or another since August Weismann developed his theory of why we age in the 1880s. So what is entropy as it relates to the human body? In this episode, we examine the fascinating research and discoveries that could potentially make diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s a thing of the past, being touted in such fields of science as quantum mechanics, physics, and nanotechnology. So, can you stop aging? Take a listen…

Consider this: the Greenland Shark can live for more than 400 years and appears to remain physically fit and fertile to the end. Or this: there is a jellyfish that swims in the Mediterranean and the seas around Japan whose individuals are capable of reverting back to the larval state and regrow to adulthood countless times. In a sense, it is biologically immortal. The question of exactly how and why we age has titillated scientific minds for centuries, yet there is no agreement, let alone a useful answer. There are a myriad of competing theories and will touch on most of them in succeeding weeks. But today, I’d like to examine the one theory I most think speaks to what most likely believe. And that is, our bodies have a sort of built-in obsolescence of tissues. The ‘disposable soma’ theory portends that once you and I have passed our reproductive years that nature no longer has much use for us.
